The Mayo Clinic in 1999 broke new ground in mold research by proving in a study that 96 percent of chronic sinusitis (sinus infections) is caused by the body's reaction to the presence of mold in the sinuses.

It typically affects people with compromised immune systems, the study said, which explains why only one person in a mold-infested home may be ill.

The study concluded that mold in the sinuses prompts an immune response that causes inflammation of the mucuous membranes. Antibiotics don't help this condition, the Clinic says, and offers some additional detail of conventional treatments.
